This is an excellent model for studying juvenal developmental osteology and the rapidly changing structure of the cranium in children. At this age, the fontanels have all closed and in this specimen, the metopic suture has closed as well. The timpanic rings has fused to the petrous portion of the temporal bone and the major sutures of the cranial vault (sagittal, coronal & lamdoidal) have begun to take on the definition you will see in the adult skull. The facial bones (visceral cranium) are still in their early stages and have not yet begun to elongate. Most of the dentition has emerged and in the maxillaries, the molars have begun to drop. In the mandible, there is evidence of the newly emerging molars. The sphenoidobasilar junction is quite open and there are still remnants of separation between the basilar and condylar portions of the occiput. The definition of anatomical features in this specimen is superb and is ideal for teaching, showing to patients and for students wanting to understand the developmental process.
